Abstract

The American Medical Association's House of Delegates was involved in one of its busiest sessions in recent years as the AMA's 115th Annual Convention opened in Chicago. More than 100 resolutions were submitted to the 238-member policy-making body, which also was to take action on a number of reports from its Councils and the Association's Board of Trustees. The physician's method of billing under the medicare program was one of the major topics of discussion. At least five resolutions and a report from the Council on Medical Service deal with this matter. The Council's report, which must have approval of the House of Delegates before becoming official policy, states that, "The over-all conclusion of the Council on Medical Service is that under ordinary circumstances direct billing of patients will prove superior to the acceptance of assignments."
