Abstract

This study was designed to identify selection criteria and specific skills/areas of knowledge that are important to the success of expatriate hotel managers in China. Expatriate manager concerns and perceived causes of failure were also studied. Expatriates’ adaptability, inter-personal skills, technical competence, and understanding of Chinese culture were found to be the most important selection criteria. Adjustment and adaptation skills, inter-personal relations skills, cultural stress management, knowledge of Chinese culture, and survival language are the most important skills for expatriates to master for success in China. Expatriates assigned by their companies to China were concerned about their future jobs upon repatriation. Expatriate's inability to adapt, personality, and lack of motivation to work in China are the primary causes of failure.
