Abstract

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is the most frequent cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States. Medications for OUD (MOUD), including buprenorphine and methadone, can be initiated in the emergency department, even in resource-limited settings. This study explores patient perspectives regarding initiation of MOUD in the ED, including the barriers and facilitators to starting MOUD and the use of shared decision making to improve patient interactions.
