Abstract

Inclusive neutron multiplicity distributions have been measured for 475 MeV, 2 GeV proton- and 2 GeV 3He-induced reactions on Ag, Au, Bi, U targets. There is general agreement between these multiplicity data and results of intranuclear cascade calculations. The results indicate a broad distribution of excitation energies with 10% of the events exceeding 500 MeV. For a thermalized nucleus this would translate into temperatures exceeding 5 MeV
