Abstract

In situ Ti-6Al-4V/TiB composites with different contents of TiB were prepared by SPS. The flow behavior of the composites deformed at temperatures of 900~1200 °C and strain rates of 0.001 to 10 s−1 was studied. The constitutive equations and processing maps were established. Results show that the composites have fine microstructures, and nano-sized TiB whiskers distribute homogeneously in the α+β titanium matrix. The activation energy of the composites is low due to the fine microstructures, resulting in a good workability. The processing maps suggest that the instable deformation occurs at low temperatures and high strain rates. The flow localization band of Ti matrix, cracking and debonding of TiB whiskers are the reasons for the instable deformation. Dynamic recrystallization has been found in composites deformed at low strain rates, accounting for the stable deformation.
