Abstract

Abstract‘Hot corrosion is an accelerated degradation of high temperature alloys, started by ‘fluxing’, i.e. dissolution of protective oxide scales by salt melts and leading to rapid oxidation and sulfidation. Extensive studies have been conducted on the thermodynamics and mechanisms of the reactions below melts of Na2SO4 Basic or acidic fluxing of NiO, Cr2O3 and A12O3 occurs depending on p(SO3) in the atmosphere and on the presence of W and Mo in the alloy and on possible contamination by V2O5 from the fuel. The paper summarizes the present knowledge and presents the models for low (below m.p. of Na2SO4) and high temperature hot corrosion which are generally accepted now.Keywordshot corrosionhigh temperature alloyssalt meltsbasic fluxingacidic fluxing
