Abstract

Surveys were made to discover host plants and to evaluate their role in the propagation and spread of the pink bollworm ( Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders)) in the United States and northern Mexico. Excluding the genus Gossypium , the preferred host, 46 plant species recorded as hosts in the two countries. Okra ( Hibiscus esculentus L.), probably preferred next to cotton, must be considered in the same category because of quarantines and cultural control. Wild hosts and ornamentals ordinarily exert a negligible influence on populations of the insect but may be important in an eradication program. Alternative food plants of world-wide distribution that represent 7 families, 24 genera, and 70 species are listed.
