Abstract

Trends in annual hospital admission rates for asthma in the 0–14 year age group were examined in Hong Kong over the decade 1976–1985. There was a 2.5 fold increased rate from 1976 to 1981, thereafter levelled. The overall trend conceals differences in various age sub-groups. Children aged 5–14 years showed an increasing rate from 1976 to 1981, but thereafter fell considerably; whilst the 1–4 year age group showed a steadily increasing rate throughout the 10 year period. There was no change in the 0–1 year old. The overall trend of increased hospitalisation is found in developed countries in Caucasian populations, our finding in a predominantly Chinese population lends support to the idea that this increase reflects environmental influences more so than genetic ones.
