Abstract

Up to 12% of pregnant patients have an emergency department (ED) visit within 6 weeks postpartum. However, little is known about the relationship between postpartum ‘treat-and-discharge’ ED visits and subsequent hospital readmission. Given that preventing hospital readmissions is central to postpartum quality improvement, we sought to examine the incidence of and risk factors for hospital readmission after a ‘treat-and-discharge’ postpartum ED visit.
