Abstract
With the leaves on trees changing to beautiful shades and the prospect of turkey-induced unconsciousness filling our minds, it is easy to list the things for which we are thankful. In the world of pharmacy, it is sometimes hard to focus on what to be thankful for when the common threats of declining reimbursement, increased supply costs, and other stresses are on full display. Recounting what you are thankful for can help you reconnect with what you enjoy about the profession. I am thankful to work with colleagues who genuinely want to help others. There are plenty of industries filled with people and businesses that prey on others, rather than help them. I very much appreciate being part of an industry that uses its time and talents to care for the sick. The common thread that links all pharmacists is the desire to help our patients. I am also thankful that I am compensated fairly for my time. In some sectors, in order to help others, you also need to work for a low wage. This, fortunately, is not true for pharmacy. Hospital pharmacists are compensated better and better each year for the value and expertise we bring to the table. This recognition is likely to continue as we march toward provider status. Patients also make me thankful. They give me the gift of professional purpose in life. By serving patients, I feel that the thousands of hours I work each year are appreciated not only by them, but also by their families. The alternative to serving others is serving one’s self, which is a shallow and sad existence indeed. During this season of turkey, pumpkin spice, and discounted consumer goods, be sure to take time to thoroughly recount what you are thankful for, not only in your personal life, but also as a pharmacist. We have the privilege of working with great colleagues, earning respectable pay, and serving wonderful patients. What else are you thankful for?
