Hospital administrators' and physicians' valuation of and willingness to promote teamwork

Abstract

This research was conducted to assess the extent to which hospital administrators differed from physicians in terms of valuation of and willingness to promote teamwork. Data for the research were obtained from a multistage non-random survey conducted in 46 hospitals in Zambia and the Ivory Coast in 1993. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 435 health care professionals representing an overall response rate of 72%. The results show that both physicians and administrators rated the importance of teamwork highly. On the other hand, hospital administrators were more positive than physicians in terms of estimated degree of teamwork in their own institutions and on personal willingness to promote teamwork.
