Abstract

Hortorium taxonomy covers taxonomy of the cultivated plants. As in the case of botanical classification, classification of cultivated plants also undergoes perfection with the changing needs, fads and fancies of man. These plants need to be studied taxonomically in order to arrange all variations in systematic fashion. Characterisation and documentation of ornamental germplasm are one of the major activities of CSIR-NBRI. Cultivar identification and cultivar relatedness are important issues for horticultural breeders. Characterisation is most important for correct identification of cultivars. It helps to understand the genetic diversity, to trace out the phylogenetic relationship, taxonomical status, preparation of the catalogue, variation patterns, identification of desirable/novel genes, hybridization, registration, plant variety protection, farmer's right, etc. Different parameters of cytology, morphology, physiology, chemical and biochemical, DNA markers, etc. are utilised for characterisation. In this context, the present status of classical taxonomy and need for diversification of characterisation system have been discussed.
