Abstract

Introduction : Disorders of thyroid function are often associated with depression. The co-prescription of thyroid hormones and anti depressants is put into hypothyroidism and depressive disorder comorbidity, and it remains an essential use in resistant depression. Comments : We will illustrate these links through the cases of two patients, one had a major depressive episode that has resisted treatment, and in whom hypothyroidism taking load fortuitously has improved the table depressed. The second patient sensed a major depressive episode and that the co-prescription of thyroid hormones and anti depressants has improved his condition. Discussion : The role of the thyroid gland in depressive disorder is not clear. Al though there is evidence that patients with under lying abnormalities of thyroid function may be more prone to depressive illness, the specific abnormality in thyroid function associated with depressive disorders remains poorly under stood. Conclusion : The precise relationship between the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis and depressive disorders remains unclear, and the mechanism underlying thyroid abnormalities in depressed patients remains undetermined.
