Abstract

In vitro incubations of locust fat body with adipokinetic hormone II (AKH II) show that this peptide acts directly on the fat body to cause release of carbohydrate into the medium. Red pigment concentrating hormone, an analogue of AKH II, mobilizes carbohydrate in vitro at similar concentrations to those estimated for AKH II. Adipokinetic hormone I (AKH I) will mobilize carbohydrate only at large doses. Octopamine, a hyperlipaemic hormone in locusts, will not mobilize carbohydrate from fat bodies in vitro.
