Abstract

Over the past 10 years the possibility of the existence of a relationship between the use of hormonal steroid contraceptives and major adverse reactions, particularly thrombo-embolism, has excited much debate. Various recent epidemiological studies have now established an association between the use of oral contraceptives and the occurrence of venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and cerebral thrombosis. There is also firm epidemiological evidence of an association between use of oral contraceptives and neuro-ophthalmic lesions and tentative epidemiological evidence of an association with coronary thrombosis.
