Abstract

Summary We have carried out in vivo and in vitro experiments to determine the effect of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20HE) on the development of the male accessory reproductive glands (MARG) of fifth instar Locusta migratoria. 20HE stimulates protein synthesis in the MARG, but only after day 2 of the final stadium. The in vitro effects of20HE and juvenile hormone III on the polypeptide profile of MARG from adults 1–10 days post-mergence were investigated using fluorographic and radiometric analyses. Synthesis of several polypeptides was influenced by both hormones in the short hyaline tubules and white tubules while in the long hyaline tubules the hormones were without effect.
