Abstract
THE Oomycete fungus, Achlya ambisexualis, is one of the most primitive eukaryotes which differentiates in response to a steroid hormone1. Because it is fast growing, easy to manipulate and can be induced to undergo differentiation in a relatively synchronous manner (the entire thallus acts as target cells), Achlya lends itself to studies of the molecular control of gene activation by hormones.
