Abstract

The focus of this chapter will be the role of the endocrine system in the maintenance of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis during and following exercise. The approach will be to describe hormone responses to exercise, define the routes by which fluids and electrolytes are lost and replaced during and following exercise, and identify the roles of various hormones in these processes. A number of previous reviews address these issues (1–10). In the present chapter, these reviews will be used to build a foundation. The chapter’s primary emphasis will be on new findings and their impact on our understanding of the function of the endocrine system in fluid and electrolyte homeostasis during and following exercise.
