Abstract
The first reports that rat liver contained endogenous carbonic anhydrase (CA)4,11 indicated that the CO2 hydrase activity of liver CA was poorly inhibited by acetazolamide compared with the strong inhibition of rat red cell CAs (CA I and CA II). A partial purification of CA from the liver of male rats showed that the specific CO2 hydrase activity of this acetazolamide-resistant form was approximately 1% of CA H purified from rat red cells.5 The livers of male rats contained far more of the sulfonamide-refractory form of CA than did the livers of female rats. However, female rat livers were richer than male livers in a “high-activity” sulfonamide-sensitive CA. Testosterone apparently induced the male type CA.4
