Abstract

AbstractA 6‐year‐old entire female domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with a rapidly growing soft tissue mass between the scapulae. The mass was surgically removed and several parts of a previously placed deslorelin acetate hormonal implant were identified within the growth. Histopathological examination revealed an implant‐associated spindle cell sarcoma with a number of histological features similar to those identified in feline injection‐site sarcoma and microchip‐associated sarcomas, such as poorly differentiated spindle cells, areas of necrosis, pleomorphic elongated nuclei with a high mitotic rate and atypical mitoses. This is the first report of a soft tissue sarcoma apparently associated with a hormonal implant.
