Abstract

Abstract The addition of estradiol to homogenates of human term placenta leads to increases in incorporation of inorganic P 32 into ATP, utilization of citrate, accumulation of α-ketoglutarate, and oxygen consumption. Placental mitochondria have a P:O ratio of 1.3 when DPNH is oxidized and 0.2 when TPNH is oxidized. The placenta contains DPN largely in its oxidized form and TPN largely in its reduced form. The relation of these observations to estrogen action in vivo is discussed.
