Abstract

This paper reviews recent information concerning seasonal regulation of ovulation in the mare, and the potential for induction of single and multiple ovulations in seasonally anestrous and in cycling mares. Studies utilizing artificial photoperiod, or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in a combination of doses, routes, and patterns of administration for the induction of ovulation in seasonally anestrous or transitional mares are discussed. Furthermore, the difficulty in controlling the time of ovulation in cycling mares is considered, and the potential for GnRH analogs to induce multiple ovulations is explored.
