Abstract

BIPOLAR CELL responses to illumination of the surround have been thought to be mediated by horizontal cells1,2. However, it has been shown recently that the responses of bipolar cells to stimulation with an annulus of light are not suppressed by pharmacological blockade of horizontal cell activity, so alternative mechanisms for the surround effect have been proposed3. The present experiments were performed to establish whether bipolar cells are in fact driven by horizontal cells, and whether the properties of such hypothetical interaction can account for the surround responses of bipolar cells.
