Abstract

Computer simulations are used to investigate horizontal acoustic refraction through strong ocean fronts and solitary mesoscale eddies (e.g., Gulf Stream rings). Using purely horizontal refraction ignoring other effects, horizontal deflections in excess of 1° are computed. Observed deflections will be critically dependent on the experimental configuration. This study is designed to be most relevant to observations in a fixed system experiment.
