Hopes for Exotic New Particle Fade

Abstract

Three months ago, researchers at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, caught what could have been a glimpse of an exotic new particle called a leptoquark, which would combine properties of the two basic kinds of matter ( Science , 28 February, p. 1266). But a group at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois has made an extensive search through its own data for evidence of similar particles and come up empty.
