Father Simon Smith of the USA is Executive Secretary of Jesuit Missions, Inc. This is an abridged version of a joint paper of the Mission Committee of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men Religious (CMSM) and the Global Ministry Committee of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR). The paper grew out of sharing of missionary experiences and was presented at the Eighth Annual Assembly of the US Catholic Mission Council (bishops, men and women religious, laity and mission aid agencies) in May 1976. Wide distribution is being given to the paper in the US among bishops, major religious superiors, missionaries, mission board members, and policymakers. It is printed here, in shortened form, for the readers of IRM.
