Abstract
During the last 10 years, the number of surgeons in Japan has decreased by 4% (28,488 surgeons were registered in 1998; this figure dropped to 27,434 in 2008), whereas the total number of doctors has increased by 15%. The number of members of the Japan Surgical Society has been decreasing accordingly.
