Abstract

Abstract The influence of confrontation naming on Hooper Visual Organization Test (HVOT) performance was evaluated. Fifty patients consecutively referred for neuropsychological assessment were administered the HVOT, WAIS-R, and Multilingual Aphasia Examination Visual Naming Test (VNT). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that a perceptual organization factor accounted for 48% of the variance in HVOT performance, with confrontation naming accounting for an additional 11%. A naming test composed of the assembled HVOT figures was administered to another 50 patients. Results again indicated that perceptual organization accounted for a significant amount of HVOT variance (44%), but confrontation naming ability for HVOT objects was not significantly related to HVOT performance. The findings suggest that the HVOT is a valid measure of perceptual organization and not significantly affected by naming ability.
