Abstract
Trotskii's train was a unique institution in the Russian civil war. Archival documents reveal much about the internal organisation of the train and the behaviour of its personnel. An overview of crimes and infractions committed by train personnel leads to insights concerning the moral order of this exemplary Bolshevik institution. The practical limitations of the Utopian values of Trotsky and his followers became clear with the transition to NEP.
