Abstract
Abstract By instructing the Anatolian Christians to “honor everyone,” including those who are hostile to Christians, Peter provides a strategy that aids those facing social harassment from outsiders. The hope is that this will alleviate their harassment and provide an ethical witness to the gospel. The article chronicles Peter’s strategy for positive engagement with others, which includes being individuals and a community that provides a tangible benefit and blessing to those associated with or somehow connected to the Christian community, both pagans and Christians. In doing so, they pursue peace with everyone and hope to gather the curious into their community. While scholars have noted Peter’s strategy of non-retaliation, not much specific attention has been paid to Peter’s positive strategy of how to engage well with outsiders by utilizing honor and the reciprocity convention.
