Abstract
• Mitochondrial oxidative stress is critical for Chagas heart disease pathogenesis. • We tested the natural biphenyl honokiol as antioxidant therapy for Chagas cardiomyopathy. • Honokiol activates mitochondrial antioxidant enzymes via AMPK/NFE2L2/SIRT3 signaling. • Honokiol treatment of chronically infected mice decreases cardiac oxidative damage. • Honokiol shows therapeutic potential for treatment of chronic Chagas heart disease.
