Abstract
Hong Kong, a city of 4 1 4 million people situated near the mouth of the Pearl River in South China, consumes large numbers of wild birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians imported from the People's Republic of China. Some are gourmet foods, but most are used for quasi-medicinal purposes. This paper is an attempt to assess the volume of this trade, and also to pinpoint certain areas in which there is potentially severe damage being done to the ecological balance of the regions in which the fauna originate.
