Abstract

Hong Kong is commonly acknowledged as having one of the highest development intensities or ‘densities’ on the face of the earth. Should this be regarded as a drawback which severely reduces our quality of life, or should we recognize and concentrate on its many positive aspects? High levels of pedestrian activity arise from this population density. These high pedestrian flows are squashed onto inadequate pavements with as much space as possible given over to vehicle traffic. Why should this be the case? This short paper suggests an alternative approach.
