Abstract

The use of honey in human nutrition as well as in therapy has a long history. Honey has been used since ancient times due to its special therapeutic and nutritional values. It has been one of the most sought-after foods in history, as evidenced by archaeological discoveries found in prehistoric pottery in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Historical and ethnographic literature from all over Africa suggests that bee products were of considerable importance both as a source of food and in the manufacture of honey-based beverages. Honey has played an important role in ancient cultures and has survived to the present day, beeing recognized as an extremely valuable natural product with scientifically proven therapeutic properties.
