Abstract

This paper argues that the attitude of the Vatican toward homosexual marriage is based on its negative attitude toward homosexuality. It lays out the substance of four Vatican pronouncements on homosexuality and love. Three of the documents describe homosexuality as a “disorder” in inclination and an “evil” in enactment. One forbids entrance to the seminary and ordination to the priesthood to those with a homosexual orientation. The paper also presents Benedict XVI’s effort to heal the breach between the spiritual and sexual life as a new and hopeful form of thinking. It presents a Jungian response from the viewpoint of Jung’s contention that a quaternitarian myth now sacralizes what Trinitarian thought did not and so would sacralize sexuality and homosexuality when they are expressions of the authentic Self.
