Abstract

The homopolymer of isopropylacrylate of N-hydroxyethylcarbamate and three types of copolymers were synthesized by reacting either ( N-2-hydroxyethyl-oxazolidone) acrylate or (carbamic acid-2-hydroxyethyl, isopropyl ester)-2 propenoic acid ester with styrene or methyl acrylate. The emulsion polymerization was initiated with potassium persulphate (K 2S 2O 8) at either 60 or 70° in the presence of an anionic emulsifier, sodium dodecylsulphate. The polymerizations were followed by conventional gravimetric methods, giving conversions with respect to time. The initial rate of polymerization was calculated using the conversion at 10%. The compositions of the copolymers were examined by elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H-NMR speectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by GPC and the glass transition temperatures by DSC. The number of particles, their diameters, surface tension and viscosity characterized the colloidal nature of the latex. The colloidal and physical properties of various copolymers were compared, taking into account their compositions. tenant compte de leurs compositions.
