Abstract

The diruthenium(II,II) and diosmium(III) acetates Ru/sub 2/(O/sub 2/CCH/sub 3/)/sub 4/Cl and Os/sub 2/(O/sub 2/CCH/sub 3/)/sub 4/Cl/sub 2/ react with alkyl isocyanides RNC (R = CHMe/sub 2/, CMe/sub 3/, or C/sub 6/H/sub 11/) to give the homoleptic metal(II) complexes (M(CNR)/sub 6/)(PF/sub 6/)/sub 2/ (M = Ru or Os). This is the first general synthetic route to these complexes and is an important further illustration of the use that can be made of the cleavage of multiple metal-metal bonds by ..pi..-acceptor ligands such as isocyanides. The tert-butyl isocyanide complexes readily undergo a dealkylation reaction to give the cyano derivatives (M(CNCMe/sub 3/)/sub 5/CN)PF/sub 6/. The spectroscopic (IR and /sup 1/H and /sup 13/C NMR) and electrochemical properties of these complexes have been measured. 34 references, 2 tables.
