Abstract

A model for homogeneous-heterogeneous reactions in boundary-layer flow treated in a previous paper, is extended to include the effects of loss of autocatalyst, represented by the dimensionless parameter φ Solutions valid near the leading edge are obtained and extended by numerical solutions of the full equations. These reveal that there is a critical value φ c of φ, which depends on the other parameters in the system. For φ ≤ φ c , the homogeneous reaction becomes the dominant effect away from the leading edge with a thin reaction zone, located at large distances from the surface, developing. For φ >φ c the reaction dies out, with the surface reaction being the dominant mechanism throughout. Asymptotic solutions valid for large x in both cases, φ ≤ φ c and φ >φ c , are obtained.
