Abstract

The cationic cluster complex [Ru3(μ-H)(μ3-ampy)(μ,η1:η2-PhCCHPh)(CO)8][BF4] (1) (Hampy = 2-amino-6-methylpyridine) promotes the homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene to cis- and trans-stilbene under very mild conditions (333 K, P(H2) < 1 atm). Reactivity, spectroscopic, and kinetic studies support a hydrogenation mechanism in which the catalytic intermediates are cationic trinuclear complexes.
