Abstract

1. The kinetics of heat evolution during the oxidation of methane in the presence of NO2 and CH3NO2 were investigated. 2. It was established that the presence of two heat-evolution maxima is connected with the reaction of NO2 with methane (first maximum) and the oxidation of methane (second maximum). 3. The homogeneous catalysts Cl2, Br2, HCl, and HBr also give two heat-evolution maxima. 4. The reaction of NO2 with methane forms nitromethane, which catalyzes the oxidation of methane.
