Abstract

Jean Sgard : Jacques Chouillet. Jacques Chouillet who died on 19 th January 1990, devoted his whole career to Diderot. From his thesis on Diderot's aesthetic theory, to his last book on the letters to Sophie Volland, his wide culture and his sharp sense of the importance of the text were used to make Diderot better known and understood. His ceaseless activity, in particular as organiser of the 1984 Diderot congress and director of Recherches sur Diderot et l' Encyclopédie are also recalled, as are his human and intellectual qualities, which made him a true 'philosophe'.
