Abstract

LEAKEY recently drew attention to the doubtful taxono-mic status of certain post-cranial bones known from two sites in Kenya, Songhor and Rusinga1. These sites have yielded material from the early Miocene period which belongs to primates of the genus Proconsul (= Dryopithecus (Proconsul)) and to a taxon previously known as “Siva-pithecus africanus”; the latter material has been transferred by Leakey to Kenyapithecus, a new genus created by him within the family Hominidae. This step has not gained universal acceptance and has been rejected by Pilbeam on the grounds that the material is inadequate for specific diagnosis, and he suggests that this material should be placed within the genus Dryopithecus2.
