Abstract

The article serves as an introduction to the publication of papers presented at the conference on Homines novi: new social groups in society (November 2021, Moscow, IGH). The conference focused on ‘new people’ emerging in societies of the past, which is closely connected with the problem of ‘the Other’ at large. The contributors analyze the phenomenon of new literati (students, scholars, magisters etc.) emerging as new social strata in some European countries. Other new social groups discussed in the papers include a self-appointed ruler’s retinue, Knights of the Order of the Garter, and the French community in 18th century Russia.
