Abstract
This text is designed to cover the problems of "fluids, electrolytes, proteins, vitamins, and minerals in clinical care." Such an ambitious objective can hardly be covered in any detail in 553 pages. The result is an introduction to the subject and all its possible ramifications. The presentation does not lend itself to use as a reference text; it is lacking in depth and detail in too many areas. It is essentially a primer. If the chapters are read in sequence, they serve as an excellent background for further study of the subject. But taken individually, the coverage in most instances is scanty and depends too much upon earlier pages to be readily understood. The best sections are those concerned with acid-base regulation; they set forth a difficult problem rather clearly. With so much of the book devoted to laboratory values, it would have been helpful to provide a handy chart
