Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on the use of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) in incurable cancer (IC) patients. It discusses patient conditions that should be considered before subjecting IC patients to HPN, and the recommended nutritional regimen for HPN. Patient outcomes for IC patients taking HPN are described in terms of survival and quality of life. Among the crucial issues highlighted herein include: (i) the estimate of the life expectancy; (ii) the communication with the patient and his/her family for balancing their expectations with the realistic benefits of HPN; and (iii) definition of the criteria for withholding and withdrawing the nutritional support.
