Abstract

JONES, PAULINE A. Home Environment and the Development of Verbal Ability. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1972, 43, 1081-1086. Variables of the home environment were examined for 2 groups matched for general intelligence but discrepant with respect to verbal ability. Home environment measures were obtained by means of a 70-minute interview with the mothers of 50 grade 5 boys. High-verbal boys compared with low-verbal boys were found to be from homes where parents (1) have a higher interaction index, (2) have higher academic and vocational aspirations, (3) have provided more for the use and development of language, and (4) have higher occupational status (p < .05). A stepwise regression procedure identified the variable opportunities for the use and development of language as the best predictor of verbal ability for the pooled sample, with it accounting for 51 % of the variance.
