Abstract

First-order 14C dating of molluscs from fossil shorelines in western Timor indicates emergence averaging <0.3 mm yr −1 during the Holocene. The finding tallies with rates derived from U-series dating of coral reefs in the area and contrasts markedly with the uplift history of the Sumatran forearc. It supports the contention that the 6 km of releif on Timor was attained largely by uplift during the early stages of collision.
