Abstract
The Malibu Coast Fault Zone (MCFZ) is a major tectonic element in southern California that was heretofore considered to be “nonactive” according to State of California criteria. However, our recent investigations indicate that at least some splays are “active,” for they show tectonic displacement in Holocene time. Accordingly, because the MCFZ crosses rapidly-urbanizing portions of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, it is becoming an increasing geotechnical, as well as a geopolitical, concern for developers and for County and City planners.
