Abstract
This book is a very accessible read. It looks at the current evidence for race-related police brutality in the USA and offers a useful explanatory model. The book goes on to consider what could be done to reduce police brutality. As it is based on US data, much of the interpretation is of course specific to the US historical and cultural context. However, it is possible to draw out several wider lessons that will resonate with any police service enforcing law and order in ethnically diverse communities. Chapter 1 lucidly sets out some of the main drivers for the book, in particular the shocking video of Los Angeles police officers beating Rodney King, an African-American US citizen, in 1991, the acquittal of four LAPD police officers by a nearly all-white jury and the subsequent race riots that left more than fifty people dead.
