Abstract

The indigenous Hindi film industry of India, better known as Bollywood, has witnessed a phenomenal expansion of its global market over the last decade. Thanks to the huge Indian diaspora all over the world, the country’s popular film industry has consolidated Its viewership in Europe, especially the UK, North America, Mauritius, Dubai, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, in addition to its huge domestic audience. The growing market has attracted transnational investors, including Hollywood film studios like Walt Disney and Sony Pictures, who are now ready to co-produce Hindi movies as well as invest in Hindi film production houses. This paper looks at the impact of this phenomenon on the ownership pattern of the Hindi film industry. Media experts have been interviewed as part of the research methodology. This study tries to examine Hollywood studios’ investment in the Hindi film industry and issue of ownership from the perspective of global media conglomeration. This will help gain an understanding of the overall impact of foreign capital in the Hindi film industry.
